Whiplash claims 'could affect future car insurance premiums'
Incidents of whiplash are costing the UK insurance industry £1.9 billion in 2007, according to a new report.
Research by the AA, in its Tackling whiplash: prevention, care, compensation report, found that the average cost of a whiplash personal injury claim was £66.
The study also found during 2007 that 430,000 people put in a personal injury claim for incidents of whiplash.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said the injury could become an "increasingly important factor" in the future prices for people's car insurance cover.
"The cost of whiplash claims equates to about £66 for every UK car insurance policy, or about 14 per cent of the average car insurance premium," he stated.
Mr Douglas added the claims are more than double the cost of those lodged relating to accidents with uninsured drivers.
A recent survey by the personal loans arm of the AA found that 45 per cent of Britons say finding a car that is cheap to run is the main priority when searching for a new vehicle.
